Huge crowds deliver early problems at some caucus sites tonight
Big crowds generated some early chaos tonight at Minnesota caucus sites, with packed rooms inside and traffic jams outside leaving many frustrated.
Organizational problems popped up at sites across Minnesota and especially around the Twin Cities as caucus leaders struggled to handle the early crush.DFL and Republican leaders urged people to continue to their caucus sites and promised that those who were in line by 8 p.m. would get a chance to cast their vote.
Crowds were out the door and around the corner at the GOP caucus at Minneapolis Edison High School as volunteers worked to get people to the right classroom.
Some caucus-goers struggled to reach Roseville High School. Some 30 minutes after caucuses were set to start, Lyssa Cummings of St. Paul reported she couldn’t get anywhere near the school and was considering turning around.
At Andover High School in the north metro, caucus organizers reported running short of ballots 20 minutes after the meeting was set to begin. At Murphy Hall on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus, DFL caucus leaders also reported running out of ballots. They planned to switch to note pad paper soon.
“Could not get to our caucus at Blaine High School, a would-be caucus-goer wrote MPR News. “All lots and all side street parking full. Very dangerous situation with people running across roads in the dark. Three votes for Hillary (Clinton) were not cast. Sad.”At the DFL caucus site at Duluth East High School, coordinator Manny Houle said big crowds were expected, but that organizers still weren't prepared for how many people showed up. People
parked five blocks away and walked to cast votes. They waited outside early.
Organizers printed thousands of ballots and then made handmade ballots to give out to people.Betsy Ellis found frustration as she tried to get to Apple Valley High School for a Democratic caucus.
“Traffic was backed up a couple miles away from the school,” Ellis emailed MPR News about 30 minutes after the caucus was to start. “When I finally got to the parking lot, it was like the State Fair parking lot without the shuttles. I'm not sure people were prepared to stand outside for very long, waiting to get in, but when I was done and left the building the line, including people in wheelchairs, people with babies, elderly people, was at least a city block long.”
She added: “It really made me proud of being a Minnesotan, and proud of our Democratic process!”
